The Assassin and the Whine #15 Cover

The Assassin and the Whiner #15

The Assassin... has always been some sort of diary, but this time Carrie takes it more literally. Unable to write or draw for a long time (it's been three years since the last issue!), Carrie forced herself to commit something, anything to paper every day. This issue is a compilation of the best entries that Carrie decided to publish from that diary. The entries vary wildly, from been stared at by dead penises (!!) at the Body Worlds exhibit in L.A., to contemplating her "buddha belly" and detachment, to having nose orgasms, passing by some lighted goodness and being brought back to the Palatine Hill in Rome by the peculiar chirping of a bird.

Size: quarter-letter, pages, $1.50

The Assassin and the Whiner #14 Cover

The Assassin and the Whiner #14

This is Carrie McNinch's (Food Geek) comic book perzine. In this issue, she talks about her first crush on a woman in highschool, her fight against alcoholism, thoughts about revenge, the loss of her libido, the discovery that her boobs sag and ensuing panic, and more. Carrie's got a funny and very personal narrative style which complements her expressive drawing well. Check it out!

Size: half-letter, 24 pages, $2

The Assassion and the Whiner Cover

The Assassin and the Whiner #13 Canadian Flag

This issue is divided in 4 parts. We successively go through incest flashbacks, the break-up of Carrie's long-distance relationship, sinking into alcoholism and finally seeing some light at the end of the tunnel. Carrie is very good at reflecting on her state of mind very graphically, her whole body carrying the marks of her emotions. She puts herself on the table, and it makes for a poignant issue.

Size: half-letter, 32 pages, $2

Family Suckass #4 Cover

 Family Suckass #4 Canadian Flag

Problem: Family Circus is seriously bad. Solution: subvert it and you get Family Suckass, Robin Bougie's (Deviant, Cinema Sewer) brilliant response to such mediocrity. The idea is very simple: Robin simply took the Family Circus images and rewrote the captions beneath them, like shown here and here. I haven't met a single person who picked up this zine and didn't start laughing right away. This is that good!

Size: half-letter, 24 pages, $2

Family Suckass #3 Cover

 Family Suckass #3 Canadian Flag

Another nasty charge in the Family Suckass series, taking once again aim at the Family Circus comic and giving it the profane treatment it deserves. The nice suburban family gets what it deserves. All the kids are loving it!

Size: half-letter, 20 pages, $2

Is It So Hard To make Cartoons That Don't Suck Shit? Cover

 Family Suckass #1 Canadian Flag

« Hey! I've got this idea to take a naive, beloved... wholesome comic strip, and give it "naughty" new captions. Is that as lame as it sounds? » That is basically the premise of this collection. If you despised Family Circus, this parody by Robin Bougie is just what you need!

Size: half-letter, 20 pages, $2

m@b #16 Cover

m@b #16 - What are we waiting for? Canadian Flag

By now I'm starting to run out of words to describe m@b... The concept is still the same, but with different strips than last time. I like this one in particular, but that's only because I know of Mez in real life...

You should also check out m@b's full-blown compilation book, Wide Collar Crimes!

Size: half-letter, 28 pages, $2

m@b #13 Cover
m@b #13 - Please don't kill my cat Canadian Flag

m@b's back with his subdued sense of humour, delivering three-case comic strips of everyday insanity, ranging from one's purpose in life, better living, crazy neighbours to simple requests from good friends. Somehow we can all relate to these bites of wisdom and self-deprecation...

Out of stock, but issue #15 is still available (not listed elsewhere, but just as good) as well as issue #16, seen above.

Size: half-letter, 28 pages, $2
