Don't Have a Cow is back with a third issue, and a fourth one is on the way, so you know this zine is here to stay. Once again a good mix of recipes, advice and philosophy. Bioregionalism, bird personalities, the severe impact of a corn-only diet on cows, the process of artificial insemination and debunking Hitler's vegetarian and animal lover attributes are among the more philosophical and theoretical topics touched. From a practical perspective, John writes about foods to stock up on, then goes on to describe a bunch of very fast and easy meals (baked potato, pita with hummus, nachos, etc). Then he republishes PETA's list of "99.9% vegan" products. Personally I think this idea of "mostly" vegan is as bunk as vegetarians who "eat chicken once in a while", but hey, I cheat too so I might as well know what's out there. There is also articles about marrying a meat eater and dining out with this species. Tons of quotes and funny cartoons as is usual for John's zines.

This vegan cookzine is a good complement to Marcie's Book of Vegan Recipes that I also sell on this site. This zine is written by John Johnson of Imagine and he sticks to his no-nonsense writing. Along with tons of recipes, he writes a good primer on what it means to be a vegetarian/vegan, and how you manage to substitute the animal products that you remove from your diet once you make the change over. He reviews Time's extremely bad "vegetarian" issue, which I had the bad luck of reading at my dentist's office last summer. On the other hand, John also reviews some whacky vegan beliefs. I like Food Geek because it has a variety of content. There are some recipes, some food tales, discussions and/or rants about various food items and other food adventures. Some of the stories are illustrated with comics and other drawings, which gives some extra charm to the zine. Amongst the food tales, there is the Taco Bravo story, the Coffee Buying Dilemna, When I Was Thinking of Yoplait, Surrealist Salad and other reminiscences. In terms of discussion topics, you get to learn how to grow your own sprouts, the demise of the Lotus Vegetarian Café in Orange, CA, the Top 5 faux meats and the mysteries of Haggis. This is the legendary punk rock vegan cookbook, the grandfather of DIY radical vegan cookbooks! While this book has tons of recipes, it's also a great beginner's guide to veganism. Sections include: No-Nos, or how to know what foods to avoid, vegan sources of nutrients, how to brew your own beer, etc. On top of that, many of the contributors discuss why they are vegan and how they got there. The recipes cover all the continents and most of the great cuisines that have anything to do with vegetarianism. Some recipes are very precise, others are "make-up your own quantities" for when you just want some guidances. Particularly good when you have a weird selection of vegetables in your fridge...
